Safe City Lahore Project, a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing public safety and urban management through advanced technology and infrastructure.
In 2016-2017, we had the privilege of contributing to the Safe City Lahore Project, a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing public safety and urban management through advanced technology and infrastructure. Our involvement in this project encompassed a diverse range of responsibilities, focusing primarily on the deployment of a robust underground fiber optic cable network across the city.
Scope of Work
Excavation of Various Surface Types
Our work began with excavation in different types of terrains and urban surfaces across Lahore. This included roads, pavements, greenbelts, and other areas with varying challenges. Special care was taken to minimize disruption to traffic and daily city operations while ensuring the excavation was precise and in line with the project’s specifications.
HDPE Pipe Laying
Following excavation, High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes were carefully laid underground to create a secure conduit for the fiber optic cables. These pipes were laid following predefined routes, ensuring durability and ease of maintenance.
Handhole Placement
At strategic intervals, we installed handholes to facilitate easy access to the cable network for future maintenance and troubleshooting. These were positioned in accordance with design requirements to support seamless connectivity and operational efficiency.
Cable Pulling (Using the Figure-8 Methodology)
Our primary responsibility in the project was cable pulling, a critical process to ensure the fiber optic cables were securely installed within the HDPE pipes. We employed the Figure-8 Methodology, a highly efficient and safe technique that helps prevent damage to the cables during the pulling process, particularly for long-distance installations. This approach enabled us to achieve smooth installation while maintaining the structural integrity of the cables.
Cable Jointing and Splicing
Once the cables were in place, our team performed jointing and splicing to connect and extend the cables at necessary intervals. This process required precision and expertise to ensure seamless data transmission across the network, without interruptions or signal loss.
Project Coverage
Our work spanned approximately 400 kilometers of cable installation across Lahore, encompassing key urban areas such as:
Civil Lines
Gulberg
Model Town
These areas presented unique challenges due to their high population density, traffic congestion, and diverse infrastructural requirements. Despite these obstacles, we executed the tasks efficiently, ensuring timely delivery while adhering to the highest quality standards.
Project Collaboration
The Safe City Lahore Project was led by Huawei Technologies, and we worked as a subcontractor for its vendors, including:
Eworx
Tech at Work
Other reputed subcontractors involved in the initiative.
Our collaboration with these organizations enabled the successful execution of this critical project, contributing to Lahore’s transformation into a safer and more connected city.
Significance of the Project
The Safe City Lahore Project aimed to establish an extensive surveillance network to enhance public safety and urban management. By deploying fiber optic connectivity across the city, the project laid the foundation for a high-speed, reliable communication system to support over 8,000 surveillance cameras and other smart city infrastructure.
Our contribution to the project not only demonstrated our technical expertise and dedication but also showcased our ability to handle large-scale, high-stakes projects in urban environments. It remains one of our proudest achievements and a testament to our commitment to driving technological progress in the region.
